Thread Lift
Absorbable thread lifts place fine threads under the skin to give mild repositioning and prompt collagen. Because visible bruising and tightness can last days, the question for a visitor is how much buffer to leave before photos, flights and social plans.
How it works
Under local anesthesia, a fine needle or cannula places absorbable threads, often polydioxanone, into the tissue. Some threads have barbs or cogs that grip tissue and provide a modest lift, while smooth ones support skin quality. The threads gradually dissolve over months, and the body forms collagen around them. Lift from the thread itself is limited and temporary, and results vary by person, the number of threads and the doctor's technique.
Who it may suit
- Mild to moderate sagging of the midface, jowls or jawline
- Mild volume shift where a gentle lift is acceptable without surgery
- People who can tolerate a few days of swelling, bruising or tightness
- Visitors with at least a week of flexibility after treatment
The treatment day
- Consultation and planning. The doctor evaluates skin thickness, laxity and facial anatomy, explains thread types, and discusses blood thinners, allergies and previous procedures.
- Anesthesia. Skin is cleansed and marked, then local anesthetic is injected where entry points and pathways lie.
- Thread placement. Threads are inserted along planned lines and positioned to lift tissue. The visit generally lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.
- Contouring and instructions. The doctor checks symmetry, may adjust the lift slightly, and gives detailed aftercare, including a contact route if something seems wrong.
Aftercare
- Expect swelling, bruising and tightness for about 3 to 7 days; this varies by person
- Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised for the first nights
- Avoid wide mouth movements, dental work and strong facial massage for the period advised
- Skip intense exercise, saunas and alcohol for a few days to reduce bruising
- Ice gently if recommended and seek advice if one side looks much more swollen
Things to know first
- Possible effects include bruising, swelling, pain, dimpling, asymmetry, visible or palpable threads, infection and, rarely, thread migration or extrusion
- The lift is modest and temporary, and not comparable with a surgical facelift
- Not recommended during pregnancy, with active infection or a bleeding disorder, or when anticoagulants cannot be paused under medical advice
- Very thin skin, heavy skin laxity and a tendency to scarring can limit suitability
- Dental procedures and major facial movement soon after can disturb results
Planning a thread lift around a Seoul trip
Think of this as a treatment you place near the beginning of a longer stay, not the end. Bruises can take a week or more to fade, and a pulling sensation along the cheeks may limit big smiles, wide yawns and hearty meals for a while. If you have a wedding, work meeting or photo shoot in your itinerary, count back at least a week or two from it.
Flying with a freshly treated face is usually possible, but cabin pressure and long seating can make swelling uncomfortable. Ask the doctor whether any dental plans, chewy foods or sleeping positions matter. Before leaving, find out how to report dimpling, lumps or a thread that feels near the surface, since local clinicians at home may not be familiar with the type used. Request notes on the number and type of threads placed.
Thread Lift: common questions
How much time should I leave before my flight?
A comfortable plan is about a week or more, so the worst bruising and tightness can ease and you can check symmetry with the doctor. Shorter gaps are sometimes possible but less relaxed.
Can I do a thread lift on the last day of my trip?
That is usually not recommended. If a problem or asymmetry appears, you would have no chance to be examined before traveling.
Will I see the lift immediately?
A lift is often visible right away but swelling can hide or exaggerate it. Settled results appear after a couple of weeks and fade as threads dissolve.
Can threads be removed if something goes wrong?
Some can be adjusted or removed early, others cannot easily be removed and simply dissolve. Ask the doctor about the thread type and what is possible.
