miraDry

miraDry uses microwave energy to reduce sweat glands in the underarms. It is done in a single sitting under local anesthesia, but swelling and soreness can last several days. For a visitor, timing and the ability to rest matter more than the procedure length.

How it works

A handpiece with cooling is placed against the underarm skin and delivers microwave energy to the layer where sweat glands sit. The aim is to heat and reduce those glands while the surface is protected. Glands that are removed do not usually regrow, but results vary by person and some sweating may remain. Hair-follicle effects can also occur in the treated area.

Who it may suit

  • Underarm sweating that has not responded to topical products
  • People who want to avoid repeated injections
  • Those with a trip long enough to allow rest and a recheck
  • Adults wanting a single-visit approach

The treatment day

  1. Assessment. The doctor reviews your sweating pattern, medical history and any skin conditions.
  2. Mapping and numbing. The treatment area is marked and local anesthetic is injected.
  3. Energy delivery. The handpiece treats the marked area in sections, with cooling throughout.
  4. Cooling and instructions. Ice is applied, and you receive written instructions for the first days.

Aftercare

  • Apply cold packs as advised for the first days
  • Avoid heavy arm exercise and carrying luggage straps on the shoulder early on
  • Wear loose clothing
  • Take only pain relief the doctor recommends
  • Keep the area clean and avoid shaving until cleared

Things to know first

  • Swelling, soreness, bruising and numb or tingling patches can last days to weeks
  • Rare risks include nerve effects, skin burns and altered sensation
  • Not suited to pregnancy, pacemakers or other implanted devices near the area, or active infection
  • One or two sessions may be needed, and results vary by person
  • The treated area may have thinner or less underarm hair afterwards

Planning miraDry around a Seoul trip

Since discomfort peaks over several days, book the consultation near the start and, if you proceed, place the treatment in the first half of your stay. That leaves time for swelling to ease before you sit through a long flight with your arms close to your body.

Expect to adjust sightseeing. Strenuous hikes, heavy backpacks and hot, humid outdoor days are poor choices during early recovery. Museums, cafes and slow neighborhood walks are easier. A second session, if suggested, is often spaced weeks apart, which may not be possible on a short trip.

Sweat reduction is judged over weeks, so you may not know the outcome before you leave. Ask for written notes and whom to contact if tenderness worsens or signs of infection appear.

miraDry: common questions

Can I fly a few days after treatment?

Many people can once initial swelling settles, but the doctor should confirm for your case. Allow generous time, and keep arm movement easy.

Will the sweating stop completely?

Not always. Many people notice a reduction, but the amount varies, and some report little change.

Is a second session likely?

It is sometimes needed. Ask whether it would be required and whether your stay can accommodate it.

Does it affect body odor?

Odor-causing glands may be reduced, though the degree differs between people.
