Pigmentation & Melasma
Brown patches can come from sun damage, freckling, marks left by inflammation or melasma, and each type behaves differently. Melasma in particular tends to fade and return. A short stay can establish what you have and begin treatment, but it rarely finishes the job.
Common causes
- Cumulative sun exposure and freckling
- Hormonal influences, including pregnancy and some contraceptives, linked to melasma
- Leftover marks after acne, irritation or a skin procedure
- Heat and visible light, which can keep melasma active
- Family tendency and darker skin tones, which pigment more readily
How doctors usually approach it
- Get the type right
- A doctor examines the patches, sometimes with a skin analysis camera. Melasma, sun spots and post-inflammatory marks call for different settings, and some brown lesions need a medical check.
- Start with protection
- Daily sunscreen, hats and shade matter more than any single visit. Without them, treated skin can darken again.
- Choose gentle, repeated treatments
- Low-energy lasers, light-based treatments, peels, brightening skin boosters and prescription creams are options. Aggressive settings can worsen melasma, so cautious plans are common.
- Expect gradual change
- Most plans run for months with maintenance afterwards. Improvement and relapse both vary by person.
Treatments often discussed
Treating pigmentation on a short stay in Seoul
A trip gives you time for the part that is hardest to rush: diagnosis. Book the consultation early, let the doctor decide whether you should treat now, and ask what is safe to do in the strong sun of an outdoor itinerary. Treating melasma and then spending days at palaces or on mountain trails with little cover is a poor combination.
One visit may include a first gentle laser or peel session, but most courses need several visits spaced weeks apart. Ask what can be completed in your stay and what should wait for home. Leave with a written plan, product names and photos of your starting point.
Avoid stacking multiple procedures just before flying. Heat, irritation and strong sun can darken pigment, so quiet days with a hat and sunscreen are part of the treatment.
Pigmentation & Melasma: common questions
Can melasma be cleared in one visit?
Not reliably. It often needs months of care, and it can return with sun, heat or hormones.
Will sunscreen alone fade the patches?
It helps prevent worsening and supports other care, but visible fading usually needs added treatment.
Is laser safe for darker skin?
It can be, with conservative settings chosen by an experienced doctor. Test spots and cautious plans are common.
What should I do after I return home?
Keep up sun protection and any prescribed creams, and see a local dermatologist for follow-up.
