CO2 Fractional Laser
CO2 fractional laser treats acne scars, wrinkles and texture by removing tiny columns of skin. It has the most visible recovery of the resurfacing options, so a traveler must weigh the days of crusting, the strict sun avoidance and the long flight that follows.
How it works
An ablative CO2 laser vaporizes thousands of microscopic columns of skin, leaving untreated skin between them so healing proceeds from the edges. The body replaces the removed tissue and remodels collagen over weeks to months, which may soften scars and fine lines. Settings change depth and density, and deeper settings give more effect but a longer, riskier recovery. Results vary and more than one session is common, spaced a month or two apart.
Who it may suit
- Atrophic acne scars such as rolling or boxcar types
- Fine to moderate wrinkles and rough texture
- Enlarged pores and sun-damaged skin in suitable skin types
- Travelers with at least a week and a half of flexibility in their schedule
The treatment day
- Consultation and skin screening. The doctor reviews scar type, skin tone, history of keloid or herpes, isotretinoin use and sun exposure, and explains healing expectations.
- Numbing. Numbing cream is applied for a period before the procedure, which is why the visit is longer than the laser time.
- Laser treatment. The laser is passed over the area, producing heat and a prickly sensation. Total time is about 30 to 60 minutes plus numbing.
- Dressing and aftercare teaching. A healing ointment is applied, cooling is used, and you are taught how to cleanse and moisturize during the following days.
Aftercare
- Expect redness, swelling and a rough or sandpaper feel, with crusting and peeling over about 5 to 7 days
- Keep skin moist with the recommended ointment and do not pick flakes or crusts
- Avoid sun strictly and use sunscreen once the surface has closed; a hat and shade are needed outdoors
- Skip makeup, swimming, saunas and strong skincare until the doctor clears you
- Redness can linger for weeks, so plan for it in photos
Things to know first
- Possible effects include prolonged redness, infection, herpes flare-ups, acne-like bumps, darkening or lightening of skin, and scarring
- Darker skin tones have a higher risk of lasting pigment change and need careful settings
- Isotretinoin use, active infection, keloid tendency, pregnancy and recent tanning may rule treatment out
- Results vary; scars improve but are rarely erased, and several sessions are common
- A rushed trip leaves no time to check for complications before leaving
Planning CO2 fractional laser around a Seoul trip
This is the treatment to place on the first or second day, not the last. The face may look raw for several days, and peeling continues for about a week. Scheduling it at the start of a trip gives the doctor a chance to check healing in person, and it keeps the scabbing away from any flights, meetings and group photos later in the stay.
Sun is a real hazard on a sightseeing schedule. Unprotected new skin darkens easily, so plan covered, shaded or indoor days for the first week and expect to stay out of the sun after that as well. A course of two to four sessions, one to two months apart, cannot fit one holiday, so decide whether you are using this trip for the first step only. Ask about antiviral medicine if you get cold sores, and about whom to contact if crusts become yellow, painful or spread.
CO2 Fractional Laser: common questions
How long before a flight should I have CO2 fractional laser?
A week or more is a comfortable guide, so crusts shed and the doctor can check healing. A shorter gap is risky because infection can appear a few days in.
Can I go sightseeing during recovery?
Short, shaded outings are possible after the first day or two for some people, but long outdoor days are better avoided. Sun on healing skin can cause lasting dark marks.
Is it suitable for darker skin?
Sometimes, with conservative settings, but the risk of pigment change is higher. The doctor must evaluate your skin before agreeing.
Will one session erase my acne scars?
Unlikely. Many people see some softening, and several sessions are common. Deep or icepick scars may need other methods.
