Pico Laser

Picosecond lasers deliver very short pulses for pigment, tone and some acne marks. For a traveler, the first question is whether the plan is a gentle full-face session or spot treatment that leaves scabs, since those two behave very differently on a sightseeing schedule.

How it works

A picosecond laser emits energy in trillionths of a second. The brief pulse breaks pigment into very small particles that the body clears gradually, with less heat spread to nearby tissue than longer pulses produce. Some handpieces also create microscopic zones of controlled injury, which may stimulate remodeling in the skin and soften marks. Settings range from gentle toning to stronger spot treatment, and outcomes vary with the pigment, skin type and sun exposure. Several sessions are commonly needed, and some pigment can return.

Who it may suit

  • Sun spots, freckles and some stubborn pigmented patches
  • Dull tone and mild melasma-like pigment under doctor supervision
  • Shallow acne marks or textural irregularities where mild improvement is the goal
  • Travelers who can choose between a gentle session and a stronger, spot-focused one

The treatment day

  1. Consultation and test of goals. The doctor identifies the lesion type, ensures it is not a concerning mole or lesion, and reviews skin type, medications and recent sun exposure.
  2. Preparation. The skin is cleansed. Numbing cream may be used for more intensive or fractional modes, and protective eyewear is placed.
  3. Laser pulses. The doctor treats targeted spots or the full face. A session often takes about 15 to 30 minutes, with brief snapping or stinging sensations.
  4. Soothing and sun care. A calming product, protective ointment if needed, and sunscreen are applied, and you receive guidance on scabbing and cleansing.

Aftercare

  • Treated spots can darken first and form tiny scabs that fall off over about a week; let them shed on their own
  • Apply sunscreen daily and shade the area, especially while skin is pink or scabbed
  • Avoid scrubbing, sauna, swimming pools and heavy sweating until scabs are gone if advised
  • Use a gentle cleanser and the moisturizer or ointment the doctor recommends
  • Hold off on exfoliating acids and retinoids until the skin has settled

Things to know first

  • Possible effects include redness, swelling, scabs, temporary darkening, lightening of the treated area, scarring and flare-ups of herpes simplex or acne
  • Results vary, more than one session is common, and pigment may recur
  • Recent tanning, pregnancy, active infection, isotretinoin use and a tendency to keloid or poor healing affect suitability
  • Any suspicious or changing lesion should be evaluated by a doctor before laser treatment is considered
  • Strong spot treatment before a beach day, hike or major photo plan is poorly timed

Planning pico laser around a Seoul trip

Ask which kind of session is planned. A mild full-face toning pass can usually be placed on any non-event day, whereas spot treatment of freckles or sun spots leaves visible dots for several days. Book spot treatment early in the stay so the scabs fall away before the flight and before any group photos, and so you can ask the doctor to check healing.

Weather matters more than most people expect. Humid summer heat and intense sun are hard on scabbed skin, and a hat only helps so much. A traveler with a two-week stay might do one session early on, protect the skin diligently and decide about a second visit later. Since pigment often needs several sessions and returns with sun, a realistic plan includes maintenance at home and a record of the settings used.

Pico Laser: common questions

How many days before leaving should pico spot treatment be done?

Leaving about a week is a reasonable guide, since small scabs usually shed in that time. Individual healing varies, so the doctor's advice takes priority.

Can I wear makeup over treated spots?

Often after a day or two with gentle products, but the doctor may prefer skipping makeup on scabbed areas. Mineral sunscreen is usually acceptable.

Will one session remove my pigment?

Sometimes it lightens a lot, though several sessions are common, and some pigment may remain or return. Results vary from person to person.

Is pico laser the same for a tattoo or a mole?

No. Tattoos need their own planning, and any mole or unusual lesion should be examined before any laser treatment.
